BIO
Suspirium Ensemble, founded in 2021 by cellist Gala Lozynska and mezzo-soprano Iris Bouman, seeks a new approach to early music. Lesser-known repertoire from the early Baroque period is dusted off and given a new and fresh look. With a focus on the songs of the 17th century, Suspirium Ensemble demonstrates that early music is groovy and swinging like no other! A large continuo group, consisting of theorbo/baroque guitar, cello/viola da gamba and harpsichord, creates different layers with new colors and textures. Suspirium Ensemble's repertoire ranges from French airs de cour, early Italian songs and Latin American Baroque repertoire.
Suspirium Ensemble consists of Dutch singer Iris Bouman, Ukrainian cellist Gala Lozynska, Punto Bawono from Indonesia on theorbo, Jeremy Bass from United States on baroque guitar, Taiwanese violinist MengHan Wu and Dutch percussionist Ramon Lormans.

In our Italian baroque programme, we alternate swinging love songs with cantatas by for example Scarlatti or Porpora. Songs for only voice and lute by Caccini are mixed with grooving songs by Frescobaldi and Sances – all about love and its struggles, of course. They are built around a longer cantata (15’00) by Scarlatti or Porpora, in which affects of love, love sickness or jealousy are central. All Italian temperament!

Ensemble Suspirium goes to Latin America! In this programme, we bring extremely grooving and rhythmical songs from the Jesuit missions. Music is based on Italian baroque, but highly influenced by native American tribes from different regions. Completed with numerous percussion instruments, this programme invites the listener into the exciting world of Latin American baroque music. From love songs and drinking songs to songs for devotion and religious processions.. but never without a groove!
Our favourite Latin American songs include music from Spain, Bolivia, Peru and Paraguay.

In this program, we breathe new life into Dutch-language music from the 17th century. We delve into songs that once crossed borders of land and language: folk music about farewell, longing, love, and everyday life — the pop music of its time.
We explore the question: what did it mean in the seventeenth century to belong somewhere? And what does that mean today for a group of international musicians who have found their home in the Netherlands?
The program includes anonymous songs such as Ick seg adieu and Krachtighe Medecijne — about leaving, returning, and the search for a sense of belonging.
